Back by popular demand is our Explorer and Ranger sub camp. This is for Explorers and Rangers to camp together as a sub camp and to be part of the Stamcamp team, not only to be able to have fun enjoying and participating in activities, but to help run activities, crafts and even help with the site services to give them an introduction of what being part of a camp team is like. This will include a special evening programme for them to take part in.

We’re excited to announce Dwayne Fields, adventurer and TV presenter, as the UK’s new Chief Scout. Dwayne's been appointed to lead our half a million young people and adult volunteers for his values, commitment to help young people, and outstanding leadership qualities. During his time as Chief Scout, Dwayne aims to inspire even more young people and adult volunteers to join from all backgrounds. Two Explorer Scouts and two leaders from the East Midlands were selected to attend the momentous occasion at Scout Park in North London. Explorer Scout, Callum Selby from the Deepings joined in the activities and got to meet the new Chief Scout.

As part of national Trustees' Week, we would like to say a very big thank you to all our executive committee members (charity trustees) across the District.

Held between 7th-11th November, Trustees’ Week is an annual event to showcase the great work that trustees do and highlight opportunities for people from all walks of life to get involved and make a difference.

Across Stamford and Bourne Scouts, each of our Groups and Districts are supported by an Executive Committee. Members of these committees are Trustees of their relevant charitable entity, through which we deliver life-changing skills for life.

Our Trustees work tirelessly to ensure we’re able to operate effectively, that our resources are used appropriately, our premises the best they can be, that we have the necessary funding to deliver today and the plans to secure bright futures for years to come. The governance provided by our Executive Committees is most effective when diverse groups of Trustees come together to combine a range of skills, experiences and perspectives, in a supportive environment.

We can’t thank all our Trustees enough for the important work they do.

A HUGE congratulations to Tim Hall, who is scout leader at Ketton and who also assists with cubs and even our Beavers on achieving the Award of Merit! This award is extremely special and only gets given to those who go above and beyond for scouting. It is very much deserved and all of 1st Ketton can't thank him enough for everything that he does for our group. Fantastic for him to receive this during JOTI which is one of our favourite events.

Every year on February 22, we take some time to commemorate the history of Scouts and thank those who make it possible.

This February 22 – after what’s frankly been a bit of a rubbish year – we want to double the amount of gratitude we show.

We’re asking volunteers, young people and parents/careers to join us by celebrating #ThankTwo. It’s easy to get involved – all we ask is that you show your gratitude and thank two people and/or groups of people. These people can be fellow members who’ve kept Scouting despite the setbacks, volunteers who’ve organised Scouts meetings, and/or heroes of your local community.

1 st Bourne have not stopped during lockdown and activities have included the Drumming’s Cool drumming School Tasked with finding 3 bowls and 2 pans plus some sticks that wouldn’t break whilst we bashed them about for 45 minutes, we learnt lots of different drumming rhythms and ways to make all the sounds we hear on the TV and in music videos. Everyone thought that the whole thing was a fabulous idea and had a brilliant time. One Mum said that she had enjoyed the sessions at least as much as her son so maybe there’s a new leader in the offing as well.

2nd Stamford Town Scout looks back over scouting during the coronavirus pandemic

Harry Merriman, from 2nd Stamford Town Scouts, shares his thoughts on scouting during the pandemic:

The Chief Scout Gold Award is the highest award possible as a scout and is the badge which many hope to achieve before they finish their time as a scout. Recently George Stevenson and James Burrows, of 2nd Stamford Town Scouts, completed their last challenge badge.

To complete the award every scout must finish six skills badges, for example aeronautics or time on the water, and all of the nine challenge badges - outdoors, creativity, team leadership, skills, expedition, adventure, world, personal and teamwork).

George, 14, said: “The Chief Scout Gold Award is hard to get, but there are some hard parts and some easy parts.

“The easiest part is just to turn up every week and try your hardest to achieve what the leaders want you to do.

“I found the hardest part was the personal challenge badge because you need to do something that you struggle with. For me it was to present in front of people.

“My favourite part was doing the expedition because we had the same responsibility as adults and a great time, even if it did go a bit wrong.

“Overall, the award is a great thing to work up to over your time at scouts and was good fun.”

Scouting has been extremely different during the pandemic and the award has become even more difficult to achieve.

Yet through all of this, leaders across the country have been working harder than ever to help those working towards badges and awards to be able to achieve this huge milestone.

Meetings have all been organised on Zoom, virtual camps have been put on and events were run over the internet, all through the amazing voluntary work done by all of our fantastic scouting leaders.

James, 13, said: “When lockdown started I had almost half of my gold award completed.

“During lockdown I found it harder because I had schoolwork to do and scouts were only meeting by Zoom. However, the leaders would give you support and ideas on Zoom meetings.

“We had to try to work around the pandemic to complete badges.”

Through the pandemic I have also been working towards achieving my Gold Award.

I would like to thank our exceptional leaders at 2nd Stamford Scouts as it is only through their hard work and dedication that I have been able to learn the skills required to work towards this huge achievement, even through the pandemic.

The Scouts of the World Award (SOWA) is an opportunity to explore a chosen issue and undertake a project under one of the themes of peace, environment or sustainability. Here we here from Georgia who is the Scout Leader at Elsea Park at Bourne.

"As a medical doctor and scout leader I am passionate about providing young people with skills that could allow them to help someone in need. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic I was delivering training sessions to Cubs and Scouts which were well received and there was demand for further teaching. I did not want the pandemic to prevent the development of skills in young people.

I am therefore creating a comprehensive and exciting virtual first aid training programme for young people in our community. I hope that it will give young people the confidence to help in emergency situations should they ever need to. It may also inspire older Scouts who are interested in becoming mentors for their younger peers and introduce career opportunities in science and medicine. We should not let the pandemic prevent young people from gaining important skills for life, and I hope this project will go some way in helping with that".

We are excited to restart Explorer Scout Young Leader’s training across our District from this October. We want you to try more, see more and do more, we want to help you stand on your own two feet, and make memories to last a lifetime.

Explorer Scout Young Leaders (EYSLs) are Explorer Scouts who work with Adult Leaders in a Beaver Colony, Cub Pack or Scout Troop. EYSLs are an important part of their section’s leadership team, as they can bring new ideas and be positive role models to the young people and the leaders they work with. ESYLs can improve the experience of other young people, by being part of planning meetings and contributing to Youth Shaped Scouting.

The Unit is open to all young leaders aged 14-18 in Scouting. Young people from outside Scouting can also take part if they are working towards their Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards or Queen’s Guide Award. You can also be a Young Leader without taking an active part in an Explorer Unit.

2nd Stamford Beavers and Cubs create video to introduce people to the wonderful work of Second Helpings. Here is the link https://youtu.be/7uXtE4lvuS0

Second Helpings is a charity making a real difference in reducing food waste, getting food to people who really need it and offering a community cafe facility.

The initiative is supported by a number of leaders in 2nd Stamford and the Beavers and Cubs have made a fabulous stop animation to show how the charity made use of available food at the start of lockdown.

Scouts of the World Award (SOWA) is a Scout Network only award that gives Scout Network members the chance to undertake a project of their choice within the themes of Peace, Environment and Sustainability and take action on their chosen issue.

Lincolnshire Scouts are going to be running an information session on June 10th at 7.30pm to outline what the award is and what is involved. Following the session, if there is the demand then the team will put on a Discovery Event for those Network members to start their award.

This session is open for any Network aged member and any adult who supports this section.
Luckily for these children, all they needed was a saucepan and spoon to join an online drumming workshop with friends.
"Thanks for the much-needed treasure hunt yesterday. It lifted our spirits and has inspired a household Easter hunt in the next week."

"Oh, this was so good, thank you guys! I haven't seen Nicholas so animated for days!"

"We enjoyed the zoom meeting and looking forward to the family quiz this week! Fantastic way to stay in touch and still able to do some great activities and something a bit different! Thank you for all the great work you all do to help keep kids smiling!"

Cub groups from across the Stamford and Bourne area came together to compete in their annual swimming gala.

The groups met at the Deepings Leisure Centre on Saturday evening for a series of races to put their skills to the test.

The Beaver groups raced across the centre's smaller pool in a mixture of individual and relay events.

Children from the 2nd Stamford Beavers took home the trophy which they will get to keep until next year's event.

The older children from Cub packs across the area competed in the main pool across a range of distances to suit their abilities. The races also put a full range of swimming strokes to the test.

It was a clean sweep for the Stamford groups with the 2nd Stamford Cubs also taking home the trophy.

Event organiser Steina Bishop said: "This event takes place annually and the feedback I have had from parents and leaders is that the event was a great success with plenty of races to keep them going.

Jamboree Summer with Stamford and Bourne District

Margaret and Tony Everitt have had a busy few weeks, ’lending a hand’ to two International Jamborees:

27th July departed from Bourne at 10.30 heading to Wareham, Dorset and ‘Goose’ where they finally arrived around 18.30 after various adventures….. even positioning the caravan in the sloping carpark was no mean feat.

Sunday, after registration and setting up Encaustic Workshop, a day of rest…..then:-

Activities ran from Monday to Friday over a period of six hours every day. Goose, though a small camp, had 1000 young people from various parts of the world - but mostly UK.

Water Activities at Goose comprised of Sailboarding, 4 pedelo’s and a raft on a rope….. No sailing! Of course that meant Margaret had a very reluctant, but very able assistant, to help with delivering Encaustic Art Activity by working as a team (Tony kept out of Margaret’s way and vice versa….).

Weather wise it was very hot on some days – really too hot to work, but they managed.

Friday activities drew to a close at 16.30, and finally (after a struggle) the jacked up caravan was released, departing from Dorset at approx. 19.00 up the M3 to get back to Bourne well after midnight.

Margaret –“Despite all the hic-cups we had a great week, made many friends and promised to keep in touch.”

After a hectic clean, equipment restock, repack; they were off again on the 9th August to join in with Norjam -a mere 78 mile trip which once again took longer than expected! Finally arriving at Norjam site at 13.45 and from time of arrival it was “go go go” right up to 16.00 Friday 16th …..

Unlike Goose an assistant was provided for Encaustic Workshop , changing over after sessions. which meant each am and pm session helper were given very quick lesson in encaustic art before having to teach the participants (it took Margaret six months). Everyone, participants and helpers alike had great fun, and in total 2000 A6 art cards were used.

Tony joined the w/activities sailing team, sailing at Wroxham, or at least they would have done had it not been for the very strong winds. It looked like he was out of luck for this camp as well as the first, but by Friday all was well the wind had dropped to manageable.

Other District SASU members were helping at Norjam, but they didn’t meet up as there were two different staff camp sites, and no-one knew where others camped until the last day. Turned out they were just two caravans away from Margaret and Tony!. Perhaps a case of boats passing in the night and never the twain should meet….

Again despite all the hiccups and cool wet weather, plus medical issues etc’ they had a pleasant time at Norjam meeting up with old friends from Norjam 2006, and making new ones.

Margaret :- “Every time I visit Norfolk it rains, 2014 has been no exception! After Norjam we travelled to Cromer for a few days of chilling out before returning to Bourne on 22nd August where Tony finally got a sail - he had a sail booking at Whitewater …...”.

Their 2014 travels are not quite over as Encaustic workshop is booked in for Gilwell Reunion 5/6/7th September, and then next year Devon County Scout jamboree in July 2015 – showing adults how to organise and run an Encaustic Workshop for Scouts.

Stamford and Ketton Explorers have spent a weekend learning bush craft skills at Dukes Covert campsite. Working towards their survival skills badge they have had to demonstrate a variety of different techniques including the lighting and building of a fire, learning how to cook variety of foods such as meat and fish over a fire and the construction of a shelter of natural or salvaged materials and sleeping overnight in it.

Thurlby a la France

At 6.30am on what was a very wet Monday (25th August) - 41 young people and 7 leaders made their way from Thurlby to Ardres, France.

We arrived at our Acorn Adventure camp at around 1.45pm local time and we were met on the bus by a very loud member of their entertainment team…..

We were that tired from travelling that I think nearly everyone on the bus panicked!! We had had a long journey but thankfully one that was very uneventful!

With no time to rest, the Cubs, Scouts and Explorers were divided into their groups for the activity, which was a wet obstacle course, helped on of course by the weather. The kids loved it but it meant for us a very long, damp day and night trying to get their clothes and trainers dried!

The rest of the evening went without a hitch and everyone was soon ready for bed.

Tuesday came and so did more rain but this did not stop the enthusiasm from everyone. The Groups headed off to their various morning activities, consisting of wall climbing, nightline, fencing and archery. In the afternoon, we ventured off to the Viking Museum, which was very amusing seeing some of the kids dressing up and trying to fight each other (Viking style of course)

Back to camp and on then after tea for a town trail. Still more rain and more damp feet and clothes, but the fun continued.

Wednesday was brighter, so out went the clothes line! After breakfast, off the groups went for another morning of adventurous activities, this time

canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding and raft building. Followed by a wonderful trip to the chocolate factory – I think everyone wanted to dive into the buckets of chocolate.

Wednesday night was campfire night. There were many stories told and songs sang not just by our members but the entertainment team made quite a few up of their own!

On to Thursday and our last day. Still quite dry so more clothes lines for us! The kids went on to their activities and even paddled (all of them) across the lake to get an ice cream.

We finished the evening off on Thursday with a huge game of hide and seek, although I had been forgotten as I was hiding up a tree!! (Thanks James Helliwell) Bags packed and lots of excited children went happily off to their beds.

I don’t know what happened to Friday – we got up way too early, had breakfast and before we knew it we were at passport control on the Eurotunnel. Lunch stop at Stansted Services and made it back home by 3pm. It was great fun for all concerned and would recommend taking your pack/troop on an adventure like we did!

Nicola and I cannot thank all the Cubs, Scouts and Explorers who attended for being so well behaved and represented our Group and Scouting in general exceptionally well. We would also like to thank the Parents for entrusting their children in our care, whilst traveling abroad and finally to the leaders who came with us. Together we made a fab team.
